Smart Ride

Transforming Mobility

About us

BaraBara is a technology-backed ride-hailing startup headquartered in Johannesburg - South Africa, with legal Representation in Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, and the DRC. We are building the first formal, digital marketplace for informal motorcycle taxis (Wewas, Boda Bodas) and taxi drivers.

Our platform was designed specifically for Africa's realities: unreliable internet, hybrid payments (cash and mobile money), and respect for riders as micro-entrepreneurs. We are the Silent Giant of African Transport. Across Africa, over 80% of urban passengers rely on informal motorcycle and minibus taxis for daily movement.

The sector employs over 40 million people and generates more than $50 billion annually, yet remains invisible to governments-no digital records, no insurance, and no safety oversight. Global platforms have failed because they copied Western models.

Our Vision

To formalize and electrify Africa's informal transport through affordable technology, rider dignity, and real-time data for urban planning

Our Mission

By 2030, become the largest motorcycle and taxi platform in Africa, empowering 40+ million drivers with digital tools and fair earnings and city-wide efficiency

Our Core Values

Every rider/driver is a micro‑entrepreneur, not a gig worker. We treat them with respect and transparency, providing safety training, insurance, and a fair earnings model.

The platform works without complex data plans (USSD fallback) and is available in French, English, and Swahili.

We share anonymized, real‑time mobility data with the government to reduce congestion, improve road safety and enable evidence‑based urban planning; a direct contribution to SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities).

Every feature is designed for Africa’s unique realities: unreliable internet, cash‑and‑mobile‑money hybrid payments, and the critical importance of a rider’s social reputation in the community.

Sustainability

Social Impact

  • Free safety and hygiene training reduce accident rates and the spread of communicable diseases (passengers on Wewas/boda boda often share helmets).
  • Micro‑insurance covers hospitalisation costs up to $500, which would otherwise push a rider’s family into extreme poverty.
  • For passengers, especially women and girls, the emergency button and trip sharing provide a new level of security on a previously anonymous transport mode.

Our Green Commitment

We believe mobility can drive Africa forward without destroying the environment. BaraBara is committed to the transition to electric mobility.

  • Today (Year 1): Reducing waste and congestion through efficient matching.
  • Tomorrow (Year 2-3): Piloting 500+ electric motorcycles (e-Wewas) with swappable batteries in Kinshasa.
  • 2030 Goal: 20% of our entire fleet electric, drastically reducing CO₂ emissions and fuel costs for drivers. We are partnering with battery-swap stations to make green energy accessible to all micro-entrepreneurs.

Economic Impact

  • From an average daily earning of $20 (informal) to $35 (with BaraBara), an increase of 40%. This is achieved by eliminating idle time (no more waiting for 30+ minutes between trips) and by ending the need for daily bribes to police or staging‑point “bosses”.
  • Riders who stay on the platform for six months can use their digital earnings record to access a bank loan (average first loan size $150) for motorcycle repairs or family needs – something completely out of reach for informal riders.
